LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST(by Juergen Bludeau, M.D.)

Today we're faced with hundreds of choices and ideas on how to live healthier, longer lives.  In our society's "jungle of information," we must learn to decipher which products and services are the most important and beneficial.  Follow these five guidelines to improve your health and well-being:

1)  Exercise -Exercise is vital to our overall health.  It improves our cardiovascular system, helps in the prevention of osteoporosis, helps control weight, helps with depression, and assists individuals with balance impairments.  Walking three times a week for as little as 10 minutes can be effective.

2)  Vitamins and Your Diet  - Vitamins should not replace health eating habits.  Fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat dairy products contain many of the important nutrients and vitamins that are essential for a healthy life.  Talk to your physician for help in selecting the type of vitamin that is right for your age.

3)  Medications - Many people take multiple medications and have no idea why they are taking them.  Discuss your medications with your doctor.  Ask if your prescription medications or herbal supplements, over-the-counter sleep aids, cold remedies and laxatives contain substances that could be harmful when taken with your other medications.

4)  Know the Normal Signs of Aging - Forgetfulness or losing our balance are not signs of normal aging and should be treated immediately by a physician.  Be aware that aging can increase our chances of developing breast and prostate cancer, osteoporosis, and side effects from certain medications.  Knowing our risks can help you take appropriate prevention steps.

5)  Preventive Health Care - Early detection and regular visits to your doctor may help save your life.  Immunizing against influenza and pneumonia, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking and wearing your seat belt are important.  Stay educated on the latest health-care innovations so that you can make the best choices for your needs.

The author also recommends finding a doctor you are comfortable with and forming a good relationship.  Ask questions.  Be a part of your care process.  Most of all, staying active and seeking the support of friends and family are the best ways to ensure a healthy and happy life.
