Medicare Scam Phone Calls: How to Spot Them and Protect Yourself

By Mike Martin · Your Medicare & Health Insurance Agent · Updated March 2026

⚡ Key Facts

The Most Common Medicare Scams

"We Need Your Medicare Number"

A caller claims to be from Medicare or the Social Security Administration and says they need to "verify" your Medicare number. Medicare will never call you unsolicited to ask for your Medicare number. Hang up immediately.

"You Qualify for a Free Back Brace / DNA Test"

These calls offer "free" medical equipment or genetic testing. The goal is to get your Medicare number and personal information, then bill Medicare for products you never received or didn't need.

"Your Medicare Benefits Are Changing"

Scammers claim your benefits are about to expire and pressure you to act immediately. Legitimate Medicare changes happen during specific enrollment periods, and you'll receive written notice well in advance.

Red flag: Any unsolicited call about Medicare that creates urgency ("act today" or "benefits expire tomorrow") is almost certainly a scam. Real Medicare communications are never this urgent.

How to Protect Yourself

What to Do If You've Been Scammed

Remember: A legitimate insurance agent will never cold-call you, pressure you to make an immediate decision, or ask for your Medicare number over the phone. When I work with clients, it's always because they contacted me.
